WHAT IS DERMAPLANING?

Dermaplaning is the controlled scraping of the skin using a specialized blade held at a 45 degree angle for the removal of keratinized cells on the outer stratum corneum and fine vellus hair.

Dermaplaning is a physical/mechanical exfoliation that is extremely safe when performed by a professionally trained skin care specialist utilizing the appropriate tools and practices for the service.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM DERMAPLANING?

Dermaplaning immediately rejuvenates the skin by removing the top layer of skin cells from the stratum corneum along with vellus hair. It is highly effective in minimizing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars, while leaving skin smooth, supple, and vibrant.

Dermaplaning increases the penetration of active ingredients in treatment room and home care products.

It creates the perfect canvas for makeup application and is the go-to treatment to prepare for high profile occasions.

HOW LONG HAS THIS MODALITY BEEN AROUND?

It has been utilized in medical practices for over 40 years to prepare the skin for chemical peels and laser treatments.

In spas it is often the exfoliation step in anti-aging facials and utilized to prepare skin for light chemical peels, enzyme exfoliations, light therapy such as LED, microcurrent and more.

WHAT TOOL IS USED FOR DERMAPLANING?

Blades. But not all blades are created equal.

WHAT ARE IMPORTANT PROPERTIES FOR A DERMABLADE?

Here at Skin Fit Rox we only carry blades of the highest quality, because YOU - the client - deserves only the best!

The blades we utilize provide the highest quality of steel with a polymer coating allowing to glide easily on the skin.

This provides consistency and sharpness through the end of the service - VERY IMPORTANT for blades to stay sharp from the beginning to the end! You will only experience smoothness (no burrs or unevenness with our blades so you can feel confident)!

CARBON STEEL vs. STAINLESS STEEL

Carbon Steel is a harder metal than Stainless Steel so it is more rigid. Stainless Steel is softer and more flexible. In the blades we carry, both metals stay equally sharp and will last for a full face treatment without the need to switch blades.

POLYMER COATING

is an important feature when considering what blades to utilize for dermaplaning. This coating is applied during the manufacturing process and helps the blade glide smoothly along the surface of the skin resulting in reduced friction. Safety is an important consideration and the polymer coated blades far surpass surgical blades in safety.

WHICH BLADES SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR DERMAPLANING?

Surgical blades: These are designed to make incisions or perform tissue scrapings for biopsies. Not suitable for dermaplaning!

Lower quality/cheaper blades are manufactured using lower quality metals (which increases the risk of allergic reaction in metal sensitive clients), lack the turgidity (stiffness) required for dermaplaning, are not polymer coated, often have burrs which can tear the skin and inconsistencies in sharpness from blade to blade. Not suitable for dermaplaning!

ARE ACETONE OR ALCOHOL STILL BEING USED TO PREP THE SKIN?

Not at Skin Fit Rox! There is something better we use!

Our knowledge of ingredients has taught us that alcohol and acetone are too harsh to be used on the skin for an anti-aging or beautification treatment on our skin.

Breaking down the acid mantle and dehydrating the skin causes inflammation and irritation, leading to post-procedure complications in the form of rough, chapped feeling skin, bumps, breakouts, redness, irritation and increased sensitivity to topically applied products - including makeup.

In medical offices this may be appropriate for some of the more aggressive anti-aging treatments, but this is not recommended as the norm for most services that are performed with dermaplaning i.e., facials, enzyme treatments, superficial chemical peels, anti-aging masks, light therapy, etc.

This is why we use AHA/BHA Skin Prep Solutions to bring the skins’ pH into balance. An AHA/BHA Skin Prep Solution introduces nutrients into the skin to hydrate, begin the desquamation process and create an anti-bacterial surface for dermaplaning.

Unlike the offensive smell of acetone and alcohol, you will love the feel and smell of the this product.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Be sure to take care of your skin following dermaplaning or other anti-aging treatments.

Following these instructions will maintain your results longer and help you avoid complications. At Skin Fit Rox we supply each client with a 5-day post-peel/dermaplane kit for optimal results.

CLEANSE:

Use a gentle cleanser and warm, not hot, water. Rinse off.

Do not use abrasive cleansers, wash cloths, brushes such as Clarisonic, or hot shower for the first 24-48 hours.

Do not use cleansers, serums or spot treatments containing retinol, salicylic acid or Benzoyl Peroxide (BPO) for 5 days following treatment.

TONE:

Hydrating and brightening toners applied with a cotton round will penetrate deeper into the skin. If you are sensitive, try all products on a small area before applying to the full face.

SERUMS:

Active ingredients in serums penetrate much better now, so you’ll see quicker results.

Please do not use Retin-A for 5 days pre- and post- dermaplaning.

For darker skin tones: use a brightening serum to reduce any risk of PIH.

MOISTURIZE:

Choose a hydrating moisturizer and apply twice daily. It’s common for skin to feel tight but dewy to the touch. This is good and will only last a short time. Moisturizer locks in skin’s hydration with the added absorption of its active ingredients.

SPF:

Your skin is more vulnerable to UV rays after exfoliation. SPF is essential to protect your skin - even on cloudy days when UVA (aging) rays are present.

MAKEUP:

Makeup can irritate skin after dermaplaning. Bacteria, alcohols, colorants and fragrance are all irritants that can cause contact dermatitis. Be sure to clean your makeup brushes, replace your sponges and apply clean (new) makeup to minimize risks.

We recommend mineral makeup for its purity and non-comedogenic properties.

DO: Avoid sun exposure as much as possible. If you must be in the sun, apply and reapply SPF every 2 hours, wear a hat and seek shade.

DO: Delay exposure to excessive heat, heavy workouts, steam rooms and saunas for 24-48 hours post treatment.

DO: Wait 7 days before having any facial waxing done. Waxing may be done prior to dermaplaning. HOWEVER, we will only dermaplane up to the waxing border so as not to over stress your skin.

DO: Schedule your appointments 4 weeks apart to optimize results.

IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR DERMAPLANING

If your focus is anti-aging, concerns about dull, dry skin, a sallow complexion, enlarged pores, fine lines, hyperpigmentation and perhaps acne scars. Or if you are interested in the removal of peach fuzz.

Dermaplaning is great for anti-aging of all Fitzpatrick types because it provides the instant gratification.

Plus, the cumulative results from multiple treatments, especially when combined with other modalities such as microcurrent, LED or chemical peels AND corrective home care, will help take years off of your appearance.

CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR DERMAPLANING

Do not schedule your dermaplane if your skin is inflamed, peeling, swollen, or bruised.

If you are prone to PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation): Pre- and post-treat for at least 2 weeks prior to and following dermaplaning with appropriate home care which includes melanin suppressants.

Accutane or Isotretinoin: Only after 12 months of non-use and with doctors approval.

Cystic acne lesions, moles and skin tags will be avoided and can be worked around. Always consult first though.

We don’t recommend dermaplaning on pustular acne lesion that is red and irritated.

ABSOLUTELY NO DERMAPLANING ON THE FOLLOWING:

Diabetes: Must be under control by diet or medication.

Cancer: Not while undergoing treatment. Following conclusion of treatments doctor approval required.

Blood thinners or history of bleeding problems/delayed coagulation following injury.

Higher dosages or frequency of use of Aspirin.

Acne - Grade 3 or above.

Cold Sores.

Sunburn or windburned skin.

Clients who are experiencing high anxiety.

WHAT ELSE TO KEEP IN MIND

Botox or Fillers

Wait 1 week after injection. It is ok to dermaplane prior to receiving injections. Dermaplaning after injection can move the product causing an undesirable result.

Retin-A

Stop using 5 days pre- and post-treatment.

Chemical peel

Dermaplaning may be done prior to a peel.

Post-peel wait 14+ days depending upon strength and depth of the peel and condition of your skin.

Laser treatment

May be done prior to treatment.

Post-laser wait 14(+) days depending upon treatment and condition of your skin. Check with your laser technician.

IPL

May be done prior to treatment.

Post-IPL wait 10+ days depending upon treatment and condition of your skin. Check with your laser technician.
