In my formative years in Germany and later as a resident of bustling New York City, I embarked on a luminous journey - quite literally. Entrusting my facial skin concerns to the capable hands of dermatologists, I underwent LED treatment. The first encounter unfolded within the clinical confines of a medical facility, while the second occasion indulged in the luxurious ambiance of a medical spa. To my delight, each session yielded tangible results, visibly diminishing my skin woes.


UNRAVELING THE STORY BEHIND LED's RISE IN SKINCARE


LED light for facials originated from NASA's research in the 1980s. They developed low-level light therapy (LLLT) to aid wound healing and tissue regeneration in space. Over time, this technology transitioned to skincare, harnessing specific wavelengths of light to target various skin concerns like acne, aging, and inflammation.


This clinically validated technique is gaining increasing recognition in mainstream medicine, with dermatologists, cosmetic surgeons, and pain professionals using it as a non-invasive therapeutic modality for skin and wound healing and pain relief.


DEMYSTIFYING THE MAGIC OF LED LIGHT THERAPY


It utilizes specific wavelengths of light energy to stimulate therapeutic benefits for various conditions in the skin or tissue.


High-intensity light-emitting diodes (LEDs) harness particular wavelengths of light to induce a natural bio-stimulatory effect in human tissue, similar to how plants use chlorophyll to convert sunlight into energy. LED phototherapy has been shown to enhance circulation, expedite tissue repair, reduce acne bacteria, alleviate inflammation, improve skin tone, texture, and clarity, minimize under-eye wrinkles, and relieve muscle and joint pain, stiffness, spasms, and arthritis-related pain.


Studies have shown that cells absorb photons of light, which are transformed into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy form utilized by cells. The resulting ATP elevation powers various metabolic processes, such as synthesizing DNA, RNA, proteins, enzymes, and other products necessary for repairing or regenerating cell components, promoting mitosis or cell proliferation, and restoring homeostasis. Simply put, the LED phototherapy source augments the energy of compromised cells, enhancing their performance.


For instance, fibroblast cells, which contribute to connective tissue formation, increase collagen and elastin production in connective tissue, improving the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and accelerating wound healing.


IS THERE DOWNTIME? DOES IT STING?


LED light therapy sessions are painless, non-invasive, and entail no downtime, making them safe for all skin types. The therapy is quite soothing. Research has also shown that red light therapy can enhance sleep quality.


SHEDDING LIGHT ON YOUR CHOICE: FINDING THE PERFECT LED DEVICE FOR YOUR NEEDS


With the abundance of LED devices available on the market, it can be challenging to determine which ones will produce the desired results and give you radiant skin.


Here is what you want to look for according to rigorous clinical literature:

  • To trigger the upregulation of ATP, the fundamental mechanism of action of a Light Energy device needs to emit between 2 – 10 Joules per cm sq. Below that range, there is not enough power to trigger the bio-chemical reaction we are seeking, and above that range, you over- power the cells, potentially creating an unfavorable thermal event. So, it is not a matter of how much power the device emits, it is a question of does it emit the right level of power.
  • An additional important variable in LLLT is how close you can emit the light energy to the surface of the skin. As a light source is moved away from the surface of the skin, the body’s ability to absorb the emitted light energy decreases dramatically. So, you can theoretically have a device with a lot of power or a lot of diodes, but if the energy is not being emitted close to the skin, it is all for naught.
  • Also important is the total of diodes. Diodes emit energy in each of the Blue (465 nm), Red (640 nm) and Infrared or IR (880 nm) portion of the light spectrum.
  • The treatment time of 30 minutes is recommended for maximum benefit. Anything less will most likely not show satisfactory results.

The optimal options are devices that have received FDA clearance and emit polychromatic light, simultaneously providing blue (405 nm to 470 nm), red (630 nm to 700 nm), and near-infrared (880nm) light energy to safely treat the skin.


We recognize that it would be easier to just look at a table of energy measurements to decide which device is “more powerful”, but that would be ignoring the science of phototherapy and what it teaches us. More powerful is not necessarily better, and to deliver the therapeutic benefits of phototherapy, LED devices need to practice the science, not just mimic the technical performance.

LED therapy is clinically proven to be safe, and has achieved “no significant risk status” for human trials by the FDA. Contraindications for using Low Level Light Therapy are few and most clients can safely enjoy the benefits.

It should not be used:

Over the breast or stomach of a breastfeeding or pregnant person.

Persons with epilepsy or seizure disorder.

Over known cancer tumors or metastasis.

If taking steroidal medications.

On infants or children.
